BIOGRAPHIE
Helen Fortin est une artiste canadienne diplômée de l’Université Bishop’s où elle a obtenu un baccalauréat ès arts. Elle a travaillé comme agente d’artistes (promotrice) pendant de nombreuses années et sa passion pour la peinture s’est épanouie il y a 20 ans, lorsque son mentor l’a encouragée à explorer sa vocation créative et à tenter sa chance comme 'artiste' plutôt que comme 'promotrice'. Elle a passé des années à perfectionner ses compétences auprès d’artistes professionnels, en étudiant avec eux de façon indépendante.
Tout au long de sa carrière, Helen a été témoin des motivations profondes des artistes. Elle comprend l’influence considérable que le milieu artistique exerce sur la cohésion communautaire et s’est donné pour mission de transmettre ce message par le biais de sa chronique mensuelle dans le Townships Weekend du Sherbrooke Record et de sa participation à divers collectifs d’artistes en tant qu’exposante, commissaire d’exposition et membre du conseils d’administration.
BIOGRAPHY
Helen Fortin is a Canadian artist. She graduated from Bishop’s University with a Bachelor of Arts degree and worked as an Artists’ Manager (Promoter) for many years.
Her love of art as a painter bloomed 20 years ago when her mentor encouraged her to explore her creative calling and to try her own hand at being “the artist” and not “the promoter”. She spent years honing her skills with professional artists studying with them independently.
Throughout her career, Helen has been privy to what makes artists tick. She understands the tremendous influence the milieu has in unifying community and has made it her mission to get this message across through her monthly column in the Sherbrooke Record’s Townships Weekend and participation via various art collectives as exhibitor, curator and board member.
DÉCLARATION DE L'ARTISTE
Prolifique et expressionniste, mon travail se concentre sur l'abstraction et le paysage. Mon processus créatif est spontané et je puise dans mon inconscient pour accéder à une vérité personnelle. Je laisse libre cours à mon imagination, ce qui donne naissance à des compositions qui captivent naturellement le spectateur.
Lorsque je peins, mes émotions transcendent mes préoccupations quotidiennes ou mes joies passagères (par exemple, la beauté de la Terre Mère, visible dans la série « Jardins » ; la dégradation de l'environnement exprimée dans les séries « Fonte arctique » et « Nature des villes » ; et, dans la série « Abstraction contemporaine », l'invitation faite au spectateur de méditer sur les formes et les coups de pinceau, et d'y trouver sa propre interprétation). Ma formation littéraire, en tant que lectrice et écrivaine passionnée, se reflète également dans mon travail, où je m'efforce de transmettre une certaine « poésie en mouvement ».
ARTIST STATEMENT
Prolific and expressionist in style, I focus on abstraction and landscape. My creative process is spontaneous and I rely on my sub-conscious to locate personal truth. I allow my imagination to run rampant and the results are compositions that naturally ingratiate the viewer.
When I paint, my emotions fully transcend my going concerns or joys of the day (e.g. the beauty of Mother Earth as witnessed in ‘Garden Series’; environmental breakdown expressed in the ‘Arctic Melt’ and ‘Nature of Cities Series’; and, in the ‘Contemporary Abstract Series’, the allowance for the viewer to ponder shapes and strokes, divining their own journey). My literary background as an avid reader and writer is also reflected in my work as I attempt to exude a certain ‘poetry in motion’.
